On Oppression of Women in China. LEAD: The most dazzling element in ''Ju Dou'' is the everyday work of its characters. In a Chinese village in 1. Ju Dou is married off to a belligerent older man who owns a factory where fabric is dyed. Though this weighty film is about the sins of the fathers, the oppression of women and passion challenging tradition, cheerful- looking banners of ruby, sapphire and topaz- colored cloth are hung to dry in the open air. They fly in the background as perpetual suggestions of the beauty that exists here only in stolen, illicit moments. For though the story is filled with drama - including Ju Dou's adulterous liaison with her husband's middle- aged adopted son, the illegitimate birth of their own child, a self- induced abortion, several murder attempts and two vengeful acts of arson - the film is curiously calm, slow and dispassionate. Much is due to the emotionally flat approach of Zhang Yimou, who directed this film as well as ''Red Sorghum,'' which closed the 1. As he was in ''Red Sorghum,'' an imagistically flashy but much more didactic work about a young widow (Gong Li, who also plays Ju Dou) and the workers in her wine factory, here Mr. Zhang is a social critic who choreographs actions and images at the expense of emotions. Individual scenes jump out in brilliantly conceived moments. Beaten by her impotent husband because she has not borne a son, Ju Dou appeals to the lonely Tian Qing. Hung Du Dou WangWhen she discovers a peephole through which he watches her bathe, she is at first appalled. Later, she uses his voyeurism as a way to display the bruises that cover her body. By Western standards, it is a scene of extraordinary discretion and a mere shade of titillation. But by Chinese standards, both the character and the film are startlingly bold. Zhang's metaphorical approach that when Ju Dou and Tian Qing make love, the director cuts away to show a bolt of blood- red cloth unraveling in a vat of dye, establishing a major, recurring image. The old husband, eventually paralyzed from the waist down and reduced to crawling on the ground and propelling himself around in a bucket on wheels, will try to push Ju Dou's child into a vat. And years later the child himself, an adolescent disgusted with gossip about his mother's adultery and enraged at Tian Qing, will take his own violent revenge in a scene that involves the same vat of red dye associated with his conception. Beginning his story in the 1. Mr. Zhang situates it safely in the pre- Communist period; yet his criticism of the ancient traditions that force Ju Dou to despair clearly reverberates through much of 2. Chinese history. Asking for dramatic power and psychological depth as well may be expecting too much. At Alice Tully Hall, as part of the 2. New York Film Festival. Running time: 9. 4 minutes.
